Nepali pop songs were introduced in Nepal in mid 60s with some quality singers like Harish, Kaumar Basnet and Om Bikram Bista. Because of the supremacy of modern songs only few Nepali pop songs were noticed by both the old as well as new generation people of those days. The pop music of second generation rose to its peak in early 90s as crossroad came up with their debut song ‘Naya Mode’. Sanjay Shrestha and band took a new wave with song and lyrics Maya meri maya and became a hit.
Sanjeep Pradhan, Babin Pradhan, Deepak Bajracharya, and Bhim Tuladhar are the other singers who brought new and fresh songs in the Nepal music industry. The singers of Nepal experimented everything that includes soulful blues, regge, jazz and current hip-hop. A well identified lyricist, Kaliprashad of Nepal stated that new generation or modern songs have good catchy tunes but the content of the song is very low.
A concert was held in early 90s where every band and singers of Nepal rocked the whole Kathmandu. There Kumar Basnet sung his ‘rock n roll twist’, Nepali pop song that was based on hippies. This nepali pop song was liked by everybody and it became popular in 1993. This was the start in the field of pop songs in Nepal.
Some of the few Nepali popular pop songs include ‘bheda ko oon jasto’, ‘besteri besteri’, ‘awaaz deu’, ‘bhagwan kahan’, ‘akash runda’, ‘audai jadai’, ‘akash ko joon hera’ among others that top the list of Nepali pop songs. However, in the international market, Nepali pop songs may not be popular like any other language line Indian or English, but it could be obviously seen that Nepali pop song has extraordinary development on the last 10 year, and even some of them now can reach through international market to catch more international audience.
